ODAAT would like to thank all of our partners and sponsors, the community, the city and anyone else involved for helping to ensure that this event was fun, safe, positive and championed all forms of Recovery! A number of political officials and dignitaries made appearances to speak, such as Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, Sate Rep. Donna Bullock, Senator Sharif Street, the Urban Affairs Coalition's CEO Sharmain Matlock-Turner and DBHIDS Deputy Commissioner Roland Lamb. Also in attendance were representatives from our partner recovery agencies such as Everything Must Change, Stop and Surrender, PRO-ACT, Prevention Point, DBHIDS and the AIDS Activities Coordinating Office. You can see photos of dignitaries and representatives from partner organizations at the event below.
A diversity of agencies and resource tables were also present, from the Greater Philadelphia Asian Social Services to Philadelphia FIGHT. The day was filled with music, laughter, a BMXlife program demo, rapid response HIV testing and a Kids Carnival Play Zone. These resources offered everyone from the community something exciting and constructive to take part in. ODAAT was able to serve over 1,500 hamburgers and hot dogs, in addition to giving out over 2,000 waters. Our HIV Testing team was able to test 60 people for HIV so that they now know their status and can be linked to the proper services if needed.
Performances by local bands and artists such as PhunkyMan, The Cre8tors and Effie the Poet rounded out the evening and kept the crowd live until the Ruler Slick Rick was ready to take the stage and steal the show! We had over 2,000 individuals and families in attendance throughout the day! WURD radio personality and local media guru Thera Martin was on hand and also helped to coordinate media coverage for the event.
To end the night, we had over 500 people take part in our annual Candle Light Vigil ceremony for community members to name and recognize those who have been lost to HIV/AIDS. Balloons in ODAAT's signature orange and blue colors were released to cap the night in memory of those lost.
Another special thank you to the Greater Philadelphia Church of Christ, HOPE WorldWide and the AME Church of Philadelphia for their volunteers and support.
Thank you and see you for Recovery Weekend in September!
